Problem Behaviors
Behavior Reduction Program
Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay develops specialized behavior reduction programs for children who may or may not have a diagnosis of autism, but who regularly engage in problem behavior.
Our therapists begin by conducting a functional assessment interview with the parents/school staff and behavioral observations in the child’s home, school or community setting in an effort to address a wide variety of disruptive behaviors. Therapists then develop and implement strategies specific to each child. This may include teaching the child organization and self-management skills, utilizing visual schedules, setting expectations, providing positive consequences, ignoring “junk” behavior, arranging an environment or breaking general skills into smaller parts.
Therapists also determine the function of the inappropriate behavior through interviews, observation and data collection and then substitute the problem behavior by teaching a functional replacement behavior utilizing both pro-active and re-active strategies. Common examples of typical problem behavior include, but are not limited to:
- Hitting
- Difficulty waiting or accepting "no"
- Kicking
- Noncompliance
- Biting
- Repetitive behaviors
- Scratching
- Difficulty with transitioning
- Urinating in public
